What mixer spout and cartridge mean
On a mixer card two words often decide a good or bad purchase: spout and cartridge. This page teaches you to read them. Basic choice: how to choose a mixer tap.
Spout — length and height
Length (mm) — how far from the body water comes out. Too short a spout on a deep kitchen sink hits the back wall; too long — the front rim.
Height — how much space under the spout. A low spout blocks washing a large pot; a very high one can splash.
| Example in the range | Spout (as listed) | When to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Jika Lyra Smart | 143 mm | More compact zone |
| Jika Lyra | 143 mm | Similar class |
| Jika Talas Trendy | 210 mm | Need a longer “reach” |
| Jika Lyra Smart | 210 mm | Longer spout |
| Hansgrohe Logis 160 | Logis 160 class | Check card mm against your basin |
Compare mm with a tape measure on site, not with a feeling from a photo.
Cartridge — what it is
The cartridge (often ceramic) is the mechanism inside that opens/closes and mixes cold/hot. It determines:
- how precisely temperature holds;
- whether the handle “scratches” after a year;
- whether service can replace only the cartridge, not the whole mixer.
If water quality is poor (grit, rust), the cartridge suffers faster. Then a filter before the house or before the mixer is practical protection — water filters.
Aerator
The tip with mesh mixes water with air, reduces splash and consumption. It can clog. Replacement is often cheap: Remer aerator F22, Remer aerator M24. If “pressure has dropped”, check the aerator first, not the whole mixer.
How to adjust the feel
Many mixers have a temperature/flow limiter. Practical steps: how to adjust temperature.
