How to adjust mixer temperature and flow
If the mixer “jumps” from cold to hot or children need a safer maximum, adjustment and maintenance often suffice — not a new unit. This page is practical. Basic choice: how to choose a mixer tap.
First — 5-minute diagnosis
- Are cold and hot on the correct sides? If supplies are swapped, “adjustment” misleads.
- Is the aerator clogged? Remove the tip, rinse: Remer F22, Remer M24.
- Is pressure similar on both lines? A large difference gives an unstable mix.
- Is the water very hard / sandy? The cartridge suffers — see filters.
Temperature limiter
Many modern mixers (e.g. Hansgrohe Logis 160, Jika Lyra Smart) have a limiter inside the handle or under the cap: it stops you opening maximum hot at once. Steps always follow the manufacturer diagram:
- Shut off water if the instructions require it.
- Remove the handle cap / screw.
- Move the limiter ring / pin to the desired sector.
- Reassemble and check with a thermometer (not with your elbow).
Never force the handle — that damages the cartridge.
Flow restriction
Some models also have a flow limiter. If after cleaning the aerator still “sprays”, check whether the limiter is inserted the wrong way round.
When the problem is not adjustment
- Worn cartridge — need a spare part or a new mixer.
- Dirty network — mechanical filter: Atlas DP 10 MONO, Atlas Senior Plus 10″; elements e.g. FA Mignon 25 mcr.
- Faulty boiler / temperature on the heater — then the mixer is a “symptom”.
