IP protection and cable glands: enclosure, IP and gland range
Enclosure IP and the cable entry together decide whether a joint stays dust- and water-protected after assembly. A common mistake: buy an IP65 box and drill a hole without a matching gland. This guide is how to read IP and gland range from the card, not how to guess millimetres.
LBN 261-15 point 17 requires equipment to withstand the environmental conditions at the place of installation (Annex 3) — that is not “IP65 on every outdoor box”.
| On the card | Meaning (IEC 60529) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| IP55 / IP56 | Dust-protected + water jet / stronger jet as declared | Gewiss GW44218 — IP56, internal 240×190×160 mm, smooth walls |
| IP66 / IP67 | Dust-tight + powerful jet / temporary immersion if declared | Hensel AKM/ASS glands; Hensel DK 0202 GZ box IP66 is in distribution boxes |
| IP68 | Immersion on the manufacturer’s conditions — not “forever underwater” | Legrand 098022 PG11 IP68; Legrand 098024 PG16 IP68; Legrand 381579 ISO25 IP68 |
IP on the box holds only if lid, gaskets and entries are fitted per the manufacturer. Smooth walls (GW44218) mean you choose entries; other Gewiss GW440xx boxes include glands in the walls — check the card.
- Hensel AKM 16 — M16, 5–10 mm on the card, IP66/IP67, outdoor, grey.
- Hensel AKM 40 — M40, 19–28 mm, IP66/IP67.
- Hensel ASS 20 — card says M12, 5–13 mm, IP66/IP67, black. Confirm the thread on the datasheet — we do not “correct” a catalogue string into another thread size.
- Hensel ASS 25 — card says M12, 8–17 mm, IP66/IP67. Same rule.
- Legrand 098022 — PG11, 5–10 mm, IP68.
- Legrand 098024 — PG16, 10–14 mm, IP68.
- Legrand 381579 — ISO25, IP68; diameter range is not on this card — datasheet only.
We do not say 3×2.5 mm² cable is “always 8 mm”. Measure the cable or use its datasheet, then pick the gland. No drilling steps. Indoor IP30 boards: board bill of materials. Boxes: distribution boxes. Glands and trunking: trunking and conduit.
