How to choose a towel rail

How to choose a towel rail

A towel rail in the bathroom does two things: dries towels and adds local comfort heat. If you choose only by the “nicest chrome”, you risk a hydronic model with no heating connection — or electric where there is no safe socket. This guide organises towel rail choice.

Comparison: electric or hydronic. Heating map: heating and hot water.

Step 1 — hydronic or electric

Hydronic (from heating)Electric
WhenThere is a heating circuit / renovation with a connectionNo convenient heating line; need it in summer too
PlusHeat “from the system”Independent of heating season
MinusSeasonal; needs the right connectionUses electricity; needs safe electrics in a wet zone

Inventars Semko examples below are typical stainless hydronic rails — check connection and kit on the card.

Step 2 — shape U or M

U — simpler ladder/loop shape, often more compact. M — more crossbars, more towel space. Choose by habit: how many towels you dry at once and how wide the wall is.

U examples: Semko U 250×400, U 250×500, U 250×800, U without screws. M examples: Semko M 500×400, M 500×450.

Step 3 — size against the wall

On the card: width × height (or the reverse — read carefully). Leave space for feeds and, if needed, valves. Lower/narrower niche → more compact U; wider wall and more towels → M or longer U.

Material and moisture

Bathroom = moisture. Stainless steel is a typical choice. Check surface finish and manufacturer notes on cleaners (chlorine cleaners damage many finishes).

Typical mistakes

  • Ordering a hydronic model when there are no heating outlets in the wall.
  • Taking too narrow a rail “because it fitted in the photo”, but two towels do not hang.
  • Forgetting electrical safety in a wet zone (electric type).
  • Mixing a towel rail with a room radiator — it is not the main heat source for a large room; radiator: guide.

Short path

  1. Hydronic or electric — comparison.
  2. Measure the free wall; choose U or M.
  3. Compare 2–3 cards (U 400, U 500, M 400).
  4. Check connection / kit before ordering.

FAQ

Does a towel rail replace a radiator?

Usually no. It is a comfort and drying device. For room heat see radiators.

Is U 800 “better” than U 400?

Longer — more towel space, but needs wall. Take by space and habit, not the biggest mm.
