Which compressor for painting?
In painting the compressor is only half the story. The other half is the gun, material, technique and air preparation. Buying “the biggest compressor and then we’ll see” often buys noise and litres, not finish quality.
This guide is honest about the Inventars range: DIY/workshop air compressors, not an industrial spray-booth plant. Basics: how to choose · parameters · Compressors.
Start from the gun, not the tank
Open the spray-gun datasheet and note:
- working pressure (bar);
- air consumption (L/min) if listed;
- gun type (e.g. HVLP) — how hungry it is.
Then take a compressor with reserve above gun L/min. Without reserve you spray in pulses: motor races, pressure drops, pattern breaks up.
What “stable flow” means
- delivery (l/min) matters more than “highest bar”;
- tank helps but does not fix a weak pump;
- moisture and oil mist ruin paint — plan filtration.
Oil vs oil-free: comparison. Oil-free lowers oil-mist risk; it does not remove condensate.
Honest limits for Inventars range
~24–50 L DIY/silent models (HC25Si, HC51Si) are often positioned for tyres, blow-off and limited-consumption spray guns. Scheppach Si manuals are not continuous professional paint stations.
Full car refinishing usually wants a different performance class and air prep. We do not promise that with “HC25Si and hope”.
Parts, hobby, furniture, small repairs — 24–50 L DIY can be a sensible start if gun L/min fits. Regular bodywork — be ready for a stronger unit.
Practical steps
- Choose the gun and its L/min / bar.
- Pick a compressor with reserve (delivery, not only intake).
- Plan moisture separation / filtration — especially on oil systems.
- Small parts / hobby — start with 24–50 L DIY (e.g. HC30ox, HC51Si) and test on a panel.
- Heavier workshop — HC53DC, HC550TC; note noise on the card.
- Near living space — noise matters: silent.
Common mistakes
- Promising yourself a full car with a silent 24 L unit.
- Ignoring moisture and oil mist.
- Choosing by tank litres only.
- Spraying straight onto a car with no test panel.
