Compressor for air tools
An air tool is not “an electric tool with a different plug”. It only works when it gets enough air at the right pressure. The tank is storage; the pump is supply. If supply lags, you feel it immediately: torque drops, drilling stalls, impact goes soft.
Basics: how to choose. Range: Compressors · air tools.
One simple formula
- Take tool L/min from the card.
- Add reserve for longer work / hose / filters.
- Compare with compressor delivery at working pressure. Intake-only numbers are optimistic.
- Confirm max bar covers tool working pressure.
The tank helps pulses and fewer starts. It does not replace missing L/min.
Tools and air need (confirmed examples)
- Scheppach 3/8" air drill — card average 141 L/min.
- Scheppach 1/2" ratchet kit — card average 77 L/min.
- Scheppach 1/2" impact kit — card average 141 L/min, 312 Nm working torque. Other 1/2" impact wrenches: KS Tools MONSTER Mini — 135 l/min, KS Tools miniDEVIL — 169 l/min, KS Tools ROCKET II — 244 l/min. Silent 24 L is often a compromise or not enough if impact is your main job.
- Nailer / stapler — short pulses, often rated in litres per shot. Rapid PB131: 0.81–1.11 L per shot at 5–7 bar — even 20 shots a minute is only ~16–22 L/min, so a smaller compressor is enough. Also ANS 15-50 — see card.
- Orbital sander — Scheppach 150 mm: card average 93.4 L/min, but it runs without pauses. Scheppach Si manuals exclude eccentric sanders as a Silent target.
- Die grinder — KS Tools 1/4": 350 l/min, more than the stated delivery of any compressor in our range — short work only.
- Spray gun — start from gun L/min: painting.
- Sandblast gun — very high use; often beyond DIY Silent.
Tool vs compressor
Delivery from cards or manuals: HC51V — 145 l/min; HC53DC and HC550TC — 220 l/min; Scheppach Si (HC25Si / HC51Si) — about 133–170 L/min per manual.
| Tool | Use (card) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Nailer PB131 | 0.81–1.11 L/shot | Any of the compressors above |
| Ratchet 1/2" | 77 L/min | Si class or HC51V with reserve |
| Orbital sander 150 mm | 93.4 L/min, continuous | HC51V by the numbers; Scheppach does not recommend Si for eccentric sanders |
| MONSTER Mini / 3/8" drill / Scheppach impact | 135–141 L/min | At the limit of Si and HC51V; more comfortable on HC53DC |
| miniDEVIL | 169 l/min | HC53DC / HC550TC |
| ROCKET II | 244 l/min | Exceeds 220 l/min — works with pauses; the 100 L tank helps |
| KS Tools die grinder | 350 l/min, continuous | Exceeds all listed compressors — short jobs only |
Manufacturers do not always state whether the figure is average or peak, or at what pressure — treat the comparison as a guide and add reserve for hose and fittings.
Scheppach Silent: honest limits
How to choose step by step
- Pick the main tool — not “everything someday”.
- Write down L/min and bar.
- Open 2–3 compressor cards and look for delivery / FAD.
- If you use several tools, size for the hungriest.
- Check hose, couplers, filters — a bad chain steals flow.
Garage context: garage guide. Mid garage without heavy impact: HC51Si / HC51V.
Common mistakes
- Comparing tank litres only.
- Treating intake as delivery.
- Assuming silent “runs everything”.
- Expecting two tools at once on one small compressor.
Parameters: bar / l/min / tank. Brands: Scheppach, KS Tools.
