CEE industrial sockets: 16/32 A, 4P/5P, 6h and IP
A CEE industrial socket (IEC 60309, often P17, Hypra, Pratika) is a round connector with a fixed protective-contact clock position. It is not a household Schuko and not an Italian P11. This guide is how to read 16 A / 32 A, 4P / 5P, 6h and IP from the card, and where LBN 261-15 touches outdoor sockets.
Information, not a design. We do not claim two devices “fit together” unless current, voltage, poles and clock position match.
| Parameter | Read on the card | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Current | 16 A or 32 A (63 A is another size) | Expecting a 16 A plug to fit a 32 A socket |
| Poles | 3P, 4P (often 3P+E here) or 5P (3P+N+E) | Buying 4P when the load needs N |
| Voltage | 230 V, 400 V, 380/415 V as printed | Matching by colour alone |
| Clock | 6h if stated (Mennekes 31/419/344/3319A) | Inventing 6h when the card omits it |
| IP | IP44 / IP66 / IP67 from the card | “CEE is always IP67” |
| Form | Wall socket, mobile socket, plug | Ordering a plug when a wall outlet is needed |
IEC 60309 16 A and 32 A sizes are different — the plug will not enter the other current rating. Examples 16 A: Mennekes 31 (wall, 16 A, 5P, 6h, 400 V, IP44), Mennekes 419, Mennekes 3319A ProTOP (plug 16 A, 5P, 6h, 400 V, IP44). Examples 32 A: Mennekes 344 (32 A, 3P, 230 V, 6h, IP44), Mennekes 3322 (plug 32 A, 5P, 400 V, IP44), Legrand 555219 P17 Tempra (mobile 32 A, 3P+N, 380/415 V, IP44, 5P), Schneider PKF32M435 Pratika (mobile 32 A, 3P+N+E, 400 V, IP44).
On our cards 4P usually means 3P+E (no N) — Legrand 555218 (32 A, 3P+E, 380/415 V, IP44, 4P). 5P is 3P+N+E — Mennekes 31, Legrand 555219. Mennekes 344 is a different voltage/pole set (32 A, 3P, 230 V, 6h). A 4P plug does not fit a 5P socket.
Clock position 6h and colour help distinguish voltage systems (Mennekes engineering note). 6h is stated on the Mennekes 31, 419, 344 and 3319A cards. If 6h is missing, we do not invent it. IP comes from the card: IP44 on Mennekes 31 and Legrand 555219. Do not assume “CEE is always IP67”.
LBN 261-15 28.1 (2) (Cabinet Regulation No. 355, in force 01.07.2025, checked 18 Oct 2026) requires residual current protection ≤30 mA for sockets up to 32 A for mobile equipment used outdoors. That scenario — not every CEE in a building. 63 A is outside that point. Device class still follows 28.3 — residual current protection and RCD types.
Check: current 16/32/63 A, poles, voltage on the card, clock position if stated, IP, plug vs socket vs coupler, and protection on the circuit. Category after hygiene: CEE industrial sockets. Household sockets stay in sockets and switches.
