PALĪGS

Which drill bits should I choose?

For wood, metal, masonry or concrete — tell us the material and the size of the hole, and PALĪGS will help you pick the right drill bit type: standard, SDS or hole saw.

PALĪGS

Start choosing

The right bit often matters more than the tool itself — a wrong bit wastes time, overheats and can damage the material. The choice starts with one clear question: what material will you work with, and is the hole a standard one or a large one?

The material decides the bit

Wood, metal and masonry

For wood, metal and masonry you usually use bits with a cylindrical shank in a standard drill. Each material has its own bit geometry, so the same bit rarely does everything well.

Concrete

Concrete needs an SDS bit and a rotary hammer. An SDS shank is not “universal” and does not belong in a standard chuck.

Large holes — hole saws

Hole saws and similar solutions are for large openings — cables, pipes, plasterboard structures. If you only need a 6–10 mm hole, a hole saw is overkill.

Standard bits, SDS and hole saws — quick comparison

  • Standard bits — for drills, in wood, metal and light masonry.
  • SDS bits — for rotary hammers, in concrete and stone.
  • Hole saws — for large openings in wood, plasterboard and similar materials.

Common mistakes

Buying “one bit for everything” rarely works. A metal bit in wood and an SDS concrete bit in wood will behave very differently. Likewise, an SDS bit in a standard drill is not the right pair — the bit and the tool must match.

Accessories decide the result

A good bit in an average drill often works better than a poor bit in an expensive tool. If you have problems with drilling — slow progress, burning, wandering — check the bit first.

If you do not know the material

Choose “I don’t know” — PALĪGS will point you to a safer, more versatile option, and you can continue in the catalogue by type. Better a short “I’m not sure” than a guess that leads to the wrong bit.

How to use this helper

Choose the material and the hole size. If you are unsure, pick “I don’t know”. PALĪGS does not mix standard bits with SDS and hole saws.

Frequently asked questions

Will an SDS bit fit a regular drill?
No. SDS is for rotary hammers. A regular drill needs bits with a cylindrical shank.
What bit should I use for metal?
Metal bits suited to the diameter and tool. The helper points you to the matching category.
When do I need a hole saw?
For large holes in wood or plasterboard — for cables, pipes or fittings — not for ordinary small diameters.
Can one bit do everything?
Rarely. The material decides the shape and the shank, so choose for your main material, or pick “I don’t know”.
Why does my drilling feel slow or burn the material?
Often the bit is worn or the wrong type for the material. Check the bit before pressing harder.
Do I need special bits for concrete?
Yes. Concrete work normally uses SDS bits with a rotary hammer, not standard bits in a regular drill.
