How to choose oil and grease: chain, 4T and EP-2
“Oil” in the shop hides at least three things: chain oil, four-stroke engine oil and a grease cartridge. This page keeps the cards apart. Chainsaw chain: chain care. Compressor oil is another guide — these cards do not replace it.
| On the card | Meaning | Do not mix |
|---|---|---|
| Chain oil / Pilarol / CHAIN OIL | Bar and chain, not the crankcase | SAE30 4T for a mower |
| Garden 4T SAE30 | Four-stroke garden engine | Chain oil “because it is a saw too” |
| EP-2 / NLGI-2 / Lithium | Cartridge grease, bearings | Pouring it into the chain tank |
| SMAROL NANO for mowers | Gears in a trimmer/mower | The red universal cartridge “the same” |
Valvoline 907735 chain oil 1 L — CHAIN OIL, ISO L-AC / ISO 6743-1. ORLEN Pilarol VG 68 1 L — chain saws, VG 68 on the card. Both are for the chain, not a 4T crankcase.
Gudnord Garden 4T SAE30 0.6 L — four-stroke mowers, SAE30, API SG/CD. Gudnord Garden 4T SAE30 1 L — same grade, larger pack. SAE30 is not “thicker chain oil”.
ORLEN Liten EP-2 400 g — NLGI-2, DIN 51 502 K2N-30, −30…+140 °C. Valvoline Lithium EP-2 400 g — lithium, DIN 51502 KP2K-30, −30…+120 °C. Valvoline Complex Red 2 400 g — lithium complex, red, −25…+160 °C. Red is not “the same EP-2 with dye” — temperature and thickener differ on the card.
ORLEN SMAROL NANO 150 g — mowers and trimmers, crossing-shaft gears. Not a 400 g EP-2 bearing cartridge and not chain oil. Garden machines: garden guide.
Before you buy: chain, 4T crankcase or bearing; then SAE / NLGI / VG as printed. Oils and lubricants.
