How to choose a siphon for basin, bath and shower
A siphon is a “water seal”: it stops drain smells coming back into the room. The wrong diameter or type ends in smell or a leak. This guide — siphons and wastes. Related: drainage, smells.
By appliance
| Appliance | What to look for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basin | 1¼ × 32/40 mm, with/without overflow | Viega 1¼×40, Viega 1¼×32, Wirquin chrome |
| Bath | Bath siphon with plug/chain, 40/50 | Viega bath siphon |
| Shower tray | Shower siphon, often Ø90 cap | Viega shower siphon, Geberit cap |
Material
Plastic — typical and practical. Chrome brass — for visible places (Viega chrome, Wirquin Quick Clac black). Design does not help if the diameter is wrong.
Waste and diverter
Some siphons have a separate waste / diverter — Viega diverter 1½. Read the card: “without overflow” means a different kit.
