How to fit a compression fitting
A compression fitting joins pipe without welding — if the type fits the system. Examples: Elysee 20×½″, 20×¾″ male, 20×¾″ female, 20×½″ female. Basics: pipes guide.
When this method fits
- The manufacturer specifies compression for this material.
- You have the correct diameter and seal/ring.
- You are not hiding a “temporary” joint in a wall with no access (if the instructions forbid it).
Sequence
- Cut the pipe square; deburr inside/outside.
- Fit the nut and ring/seal in the correct order per the diagram.
- Push the pipe to the stop — incomplete insertion = leak.
- Tighten with a spanner: firm, but not “until it snaps”.
- Test under pressure; check for moisture with paper.
Typical mistakes
- Compression on a PP-R weld line “because there is no welder”.
- Skew cut and burrs under the seal.
- Overtightening — deforms the seal.
- Forgetting seals in assembly — seals.
FAQ
Can I dismantle and reuse?
Often the seal/ring is better replaced. Follow the manufacturer.
