How to choose valves and shut-off fittings
Valves protect and control the water line. Choice starts with the job, not brass shine. Basics: plumbing map. Comparison: ball or pressure-reducing.
Job map
| Job | Type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stop backflow | Check valve | Genebre 1/2″, with flap, 3/4″ |
| Catch debris mechanically | Strainer / filter fitting | 1/2″, 3/4″ |
| Shut the line for service | Ball / shut-off valve | See DN and thread on the card |
For room heating control see radiator valves, not “any valve” from this category.
Diameter and thread
1/2″ is not “almost” 3/4″. Read the existing line. Filtration deeper: water filter.
Typical mistakes
- Mixing a check valve with a ball valve.
- Fitting a strainer and forgetting to clean it.
- Buying a PRV when you only need shut-off — explanation.
